I’m not that much into what’s called “dubstep” these days, through many reasons… but some exclusions like this one BENGA‘s new EP on Bristol’s Kapsize make me feel real proud to be part of the world’s big dubstep army. From now the proper heavy acid-riddim “Acid Lie” becomes my super powerful extra-dangerous weapon for the highest spot of my set. Kids get scared… experienced ravers go wild!

Kapsize is very proud to present our next release from none other than international dubstep superstar – BENGA! A man who should need little introduction – Benga has been famously instrumental in shepherding dubstep music from its inception almost 10 years ago, right through to the global phenomenon it has become now. Having stormed the charts and festivals recently as one third of the mighty Magnetic Man, Benga is still able to walk a delicate tightrope – consistently providing us with credible underground dancefloor music with an accessible edge. The two cuts Benga lets loose here on Kapsize, ‘Faithless’ and ’Acid Lie’, exemplify this finely tuned understanding of how to work a dancefloor into a frenzy without losing one’s cool. Back in 2002 dubstep music started to morph from UK garage – and in no small part as a result of Benga and his partner in crime Skream taking to the buttons to build beats. The duo took these 2-step influences into bold new, often dark, experimental territories. By 2006 this music started popping its head above the murky underground and Benga and Skream had already confirmed a front seat ride on the rollercoaster of a journey that has followed – constantly pushing their music forward and reaching out beyond expectation with every passing year. Benga dropped his ‘Diary Of An African Warrior’ LP in 2008 and it is still widely considered one of the most internationally successful dubstep albums written to date. It featured tracks like his anthemic collaboration with Coki, ‘Night’ which gained the undiluted attention of many DJs and new fans outside of existing dubstep circles – it was even ranked by Giles Peterson as his ‘Tune Of The Year’! Headling clubs and festivals ever since – either on his own, DJing back-to-back with Skream or as part of major label outfit Magnetic Man – Benga has found himself at the forefront of the dubstep scene and rightfully so. Kapsize is proud to host two excellent rhythms from a true dubstep guru. So onto the music… ’Faithless’ has been a staple of Joker‘s sets for several months now – a solid power anthem of a tune. Building up initially with a 4/4 kick pattern and fast chopping cyber samples, ‘Faithless’ soon introduces a Prodigy-esque riff – something that sonically sits between a distorted guitar sample and futuristic synth sound – before laying down the sub-heavy pressure of the full drop. A massive club tune by even Benga’s own standards! Flip then for the equally excellent ‘Acid Lie’ which leads with a looping, low-slung and sleezy live bass line – think something from the soundtrack to Kill Bill or Snatch, warning the imminent presence of some bad dudes! Rising textures bring in the leading acid riff line which continues to morph dynamically over the thundering sub bass. A retro rave reference with a very futuristic twist – one for the heads and the ravers alike!
