KIEVBASS: Introduce yourself in several sentences for those who might be not familiar with you yet.
KALBATA: Kalbata, real name Ariel. Bass Music producer.
KB: Your favorite gig of the year so far?
K: Last Friday was a good one. I played after Untold in Tel Aviv at a club called the Block. They have a custom made rotary mixer there with moog filters on each channel… It’s always a challenge playing on that thing but I think I managed it well. It was my first gig back home after being away for 2 months, and it was a really good night.
KB: What does your studio setup looks like atm?
K: I work on PC running Cubase. I use a few analog bits such as a moog prodigy, an SH101 and an analog delay and reverb. Dynaudio monitors and a Native Instruments interface.
KB: What projects are you currently working on? Plans for the near future?
K: I started playing around with recording on tape. My mate has a 16 track Fostex tape machine and we’ve started producing with that last year. My next 12” on Soul Jazz is the second record we did this way. It’s a very inspiring medium for me. Other than that I got two EP’s coming out on Double Science and on Yellow Machine and remixes I did for Earlyman ft. Killer P and Jahcoozi.
KB: What producers are you rating/inspired by atm?
K: I just came across this guy called Space Dimension Controller who’s doing this vintage sounding synth music. He’s awesome, sounds like an Italian Luke Vibert or something. It’s more home listening for me, check him out. Also new stuff from Edu K, Cosmin TRG and huge new tunes by Seiji.
KB: What’s your current home/iPod listening top 10?
K: I don’t have an iPod but you can check out this reggae mix I did for RBMA Radio, it’s kind of like my personal musical world at the moment.

KB: Where do you get your inspiration / motivation from?
K: Old reggae records, old Moog records, plus my friends in Tel Aviv who make music. We are quite different in genres and styles but I get to see different approaches to making music which is great.
KB: Did your life turned out to be what you expected from it? If not the music, what could you dedicate your life to?
K: I’m an outdoors kind of person but I chose doing something that requires you to be alone in a room starring at the computer for most of the day . Maybe in a parallel universe I’m a marine biologist or something.
KB: Would you like to do some commercial production? If yes, what kind of music/sound design/etc. could it be?
K: I just did some music for a modern dance company in Tel Aviv which was a great experience and I’d definitely be up for doing something like that again. It’s nice making music to a totally different audience that’s being played in an intense surrounding such as a theatre hall. Plus my tune ‘Ninja We Ninja’ was just featured on a UK feature film called ‘Shank’ , so definitely film is something I would also love working more on.
KB: What are your impressions from your KIEVBASS gig and Ukraine itself?
K: Playing at Kiev Bass was awesome. It was my first venture away from Western Europe and I found it to be fascinating. I was really impressed by that whole collective of people and I’m obviously still in touch with you guys. Also playing in that underground shelter was brilliant!
