DUBCHILD – Interview and Podcast for KIEVBASS

8 Sep

I really have to apologize for being soooo slow with sorting out the interview with Dubchild and publishing it together with his exclusive mix he did for KIEVBASS. Earlier this year (March, 2010) Dubchild played at KIEVBASS night and totally killed it there! That party became one of the best nights we’ve ever done. Two days of proper laugh, warm communication and heavy partying made me become even bigger fan of Dubchild then I used to be. So… enjoy Dubchild’s interesting answers and 1 hr. mix of tasty bass heavy madness!

KIEVBASS: Introduce yourself in several sentences for those who might be not familiar with you yet.

Rob Sparx Interview for KIEVBASS

11 May

Our next KIEVBASS night (15 May 2010) guest Rob Sparx found some time to answer our questions.

KIEVBASS: Introduce yourself in several sentences for those who might be not familiar with you yet.

ROB SPARX: I’m Rob Sparx DJ/Producer/Musician – I’m a classically trained musician with some Rock and Jazz knowledge as well, I play Double bass, Guitar and Piano although synths, computers and decks are my main thing now. I’ve produced many different genres of dance music, my main style used to be DNB at the moment its Dubstep and all things around that tempo. I’ve produced for Z-Audio and sublabels (Audio Phreaks/Dubting etc), Formation, Grid, Propaganda, Vibez and also Trance for Armin Van Buren’s label Armada plus I own 2 labels – Migration Recordings and sub label Sour Grapes.

KB: Tell us about your music and cultural background. What made you become YOU? (music, books, movies, comics, subcultures, etc.)

RS: When I was a young teenager I was into a lot of live music, mainly rock/indy/metal and also mainstream artists & bands like The Police, Eurythmics & Bob Marley. As I got older I got into dance – jungle/DNB/Old skool hardcore and all different kinds of house, garage and breakbeat. For me the 90’s was a great decade for music, so much creativity and innovation– I was really into the older sounds of Metalheadz, Good Looking, Ram and Virus and I used to listen the Giles Peterson and Patrick Forge shows a lot as well. I’ve been to a lot of crazy parties over the years and spent some time in squats but I’ve got too many left and right wing views (ie. I’m an independent thinker not a sheep) to have ever properly commited to any sub culture movement. Films have definitely been a big influence in my music – sci-fi like Dune and Bladerunner, horror like The Howling, Friday 13th, Hammer Horror & The Elephant Man plus Kung Fu films like 36 Chambers, Fist of Fury and Shogun Assassin. Another big influence has been British comedy series The League of Gentlemen, its great to have a bit of comedy in music sometimes!

Baobinga Interview for KIEVBASS

27 Apr

Busy with making tunes, managing his new label BUILD and touring all the way around the world, our good friend Baobinga who played at KIEVBASS, Nov 2009, found several minutes to answer our questions for KIEVBASS.com

KIEVBASS: Introduce yourself in several sentences for those who might be not familiar with you yet.

BAOBINGA: Hello, I’m Baobinga, aka Sam to my Mum. I’m a full time music-type person: I write, produce and DJ electronic music of all kinds.

KB: Tell us about your music and cultural background. What made you become YOU? (music, books, movies, comics, subcultures, etc.)

B: When I was a baby, I used to pull out the pots and pans and make little drum kits for myself and play them with chopsticks. Then before I was a teenager, I got obsessed with synths – I used to drag my Mum into all the music shops whenever we went shopping in town and made her ogle the latest keyboards with me – I can still remember the first time I saw a Korg M1, that’s the kind of obsessive I was. I grew up in a small village in East Yorkshire, but once a week, the local radio would get one of the main techno shows syndicated; co-incidentally this was on the same night my Mum was normally out for a course, so I could turn off the lights, turn the stereo up and lie on the floor in the dark, getting lost in the loops. Jungle filtered it’s way into my life, and once I realised you could use any sound at all in your music, suddenly Placebo sounded a bit one-dimensional.

KB: Your favorite gig of the year so far?

B: 2010′s best gigs have probably been in Paris for the Shake Dat Ass crew at Nouveau Casino (which is a sick club), and then this Wednesday just gone for Rewind in Budapest – I always love playing there, pure vibes – shouts to Palotai!

KB: Favorite tune of the year so far?

B: Obviously, ‘Tron’ is ridiculous… ‘Police Ar Come’ by Rossi B & Luca ft Killa P… But those I’d had for a while so they don’t feel like ‘this years’ tunes in a way. My current favourite dub is probably the Marcus Visionary mix of Tayo ft Pupajim ‘Vampayaa’. Love it.

KIEVBASS: Introduce yourself in several sentences for those who might be not familiar with you yet.

KALBATA: Kalbata, real name Ariel. Bass Music producer.

KB: Your favorite gig of the year so far?

K: Last Friday was a good one. I played after Untold in Tel Aviv at a club called the Block. They have a custom made rotary mixer there with moog filters on each channel… It’s always a challenge playing on that thing but I think I managed it well. It was my first gig back home after being away for 2 months, and it was a really good night. Kalbata Interview for KIEVBASS >>
